The Joy of Yorkshire Dialect
Not long ago I created a 'Glossary of Yorkshire Terms' to put on the inside cover of our Yorkshire notebooks.
It was such fun to research and write. And as not everyone will be in possession of a notebook, I thought I would share it here :-)
Yorkshire dialect and sayings are dry, funny and sometimes a little bit odd. But they always raise a smile. I really hope you enjoy this list of Yorkshire phrases.
Glossary of Yorkshire Terms
Aye (eye) - yes
Ay Up (ay up) - hello
'Appen (app-un) - maybe or perhaps
Be reet (bee reet) - it will be okay.
Bobby dazzler (bob-ee daz-lur) - someone or something impressive
Brass (brass) - money
Bugger Lugs (bugga-lugs) - a bit of a nuisance, but affectionate in tone Chuffed (chuft) - very pleased or proud
Chuffin'ell (chuffin-el) - an expression of shock or surprise
Claggy (clag-ee) - sticky or muddy
Crack on (crack on) - get on with it
Daft as a brush (daft az a brush) - very silly
Daft bat (daft batt) - a silly female
Daft apeth (daft ay-puth) - a silly person, usually affectionate in tone Ee by gum (ee bah gum) - an exclamation of surprise Ecky thump (ecky thump) - expression of disbelief Faffing (faff-in) - wasting time
Flippin' "eck (flip-in-eck) - expression of surprise Frame thissen (fraym thiss-en) - sort yourself out
Fettle (fett-uD - to make oneself busy, usually with cleaning or tidying Gerroff (gerr-off) - get off me Gi'orr (giy-aw) - stop it
Gormless (gorm-less) - a bit stupid or vacant
Gob (gobb) - mouth
Hell fire (ell-fire) - strong exclamation of shock or surprise
Inn'it (inn-it) - isn't it?
Jammy (jamm-ee) - lucky
Knackered (nack-erd) - extremely tired
Kin'ell (kinn-ell) - oh no Lug'ole (lug-ole) - ear
Mardy (mar-dee) - moody or sulky
Mek us a brew (mek us a broo) - make me a cup of tea Maftin' (maff-tin) - uncomfortably hot, often pertaining to weather
Nowt (nowt) - nothing
'Ow do? (ow-doo) - how are you?
Owt (owt) - anything
On yer bike (on yer bike) - go away please
Put wood in t'ole (out wood in tole) - shut the door Parky (par-kee) - cold, pertaining to temperature
Queer as folk (kweer az foke) - there's nothing as strange as people
Quids in (kwidz in) - to be in good financial health Reet (reet) - really
Ruddy 'ell (rud-ee-ell) - expression of shock
Scran (skran) - food
Shurrup (shurr-up) - please be quiet
Summat (summ-ut) - something
Sup up (sup up) - finish your drink
Ta (tar) - thank you
Tha (tha) - you
Tyke (tike) - affectionate term for a mischievous child
Up t'eyeballs (up t eye bor/s) - completely overwhelmed
Vexed (vexxed) - annoyed
Wazzock (wazz-uck) - an idiot
While (wile) - until
Young un (yung-un) - a child, often referring to a son or daughter
