Caring for Your Bone China Mug

Dialectable mugs are designed to be used every day, for morning brews, afternoon catch-ups and the oversized tea strong enough to stand a spoon in.

Each mug is traditionally fired and decorated in Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of British pottery production. Made in small batches using fine bone china, they combine the delicacy of traditional English tableware with practical everyday use.

Bone china is remarkably strong for its weight, but it does benefit from a little extra care compared with heavier stoneware or standard ceramics. Looking after your mug properly will help keep the glaze bright, the decoration crisp and your brew tasting just as it should for years to come.

Are Dialectable Mugs Dishwasher Safe?

Yes, our mugs are dishwasher safe.

However, because bone china has a finer, softer glaze than many mass-produced ceramic mugs, we recommend using a low-temperature or delicate wash cycle. High heat and aggressive dishwasher detergents can, over time, gradually dull the finish and cause tiny scratches in the glaze. This can also lead to staining on the inside of your mug.

Stain prevention is massively helped if you rinse your mug shortly after use rather than leaving it to steep in old tea and coffee.

To help protect your mug:

  • Rinse sooner after use

  • Use a lower temperature dishwasher setting

  • Avoid very harsh detergents

  • Position mugs to prevent knocking against heavier items

  • Avoid overcrowding the dishwasher

If you're someone who treasures a favourite mug (and we know many people do), occasional handwashing will help preserve the finish even longer.

Removing Tea and Coffee Stains

Tea, coffee and tannin stains are completely normal over time, especially in lighter-coloured fine bone china mugs. The good news is they're usually very easy to remove.

For everyday cleaning, warm water and washing-up liquid are perfectly adequate. For more stubborn stains, we recommend:

  • A gentle paste made from bicarbonate of soda and water

  • Soaking the mug in a sterilising solution such as Milton fluid

  • Using a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge

Avoid abrasive scourers or harsh scrubbing pads, as these can gradually scratch the glaze surface.

Quick Care Summary

  • Rinse mug soon after use

  • Use lower temperature on your dishwasher

  • Avoid harsh detergents and abrasive scourers

  • Remove tannin stains with bicarbonate of soda or sterilising fluid

  • Enjoy daily and often

Because the best mugs are the ones that get used :-)
